Room 20 Puppet creations

For art this term Room 20 and Room 17 have created Papier Mache Puppets. We made our puppets so we could do puppet shows for our Year 2 buddies in Room 18 and 19. Here are our finished puppets. We are really proud of them. Thanks mums and dads for helping us make cool puppet gloves for them too!

Harold is back!

It's one of our favourite times at UHPS because the Life Education caravan is back. This year Room 20  have been learning about Friendship. The key learning intentions for the lessons are: We are learning to...
  • Identify what qualities good friends possess
  • Make our own decisions based on personal choice rather than peer pressure
  • Talk about bullying and develop strategies to overcome it
  • Discuss ways to deal with conflict resolution positively
If you want to find out more about Life Education or find some more healthy games and activities you can click onto the "Life Education" link in the spelling and reading links list below.

The frightful balloon experience

Last week we wrote a recount about a mystery sound experience. We had to close our eyes and Mrs Millett started to blow up a balloon. At first we didn't know what was happening. Here are two recounts about the surprising event.

The fright  By Joseph L

I closed my eyes as Mrs Millett instructed. I could hear loud giggles across the room. I was getting quite worried from the start. The object I heard was something like crackling plastic. My eyes was pitch black so I couldn’t do anything so I just stood still.
The next object sounded like something blowing a balloon. I felt like I was surrounded by thieves alone in the dark- trapped. But somehow I was getting excited.  My heart was beating faster than ever like I was running a 400m sprint and I still I heard giggles across the room.
My heart was pounding from the fright I got. I was still wondering what the mystery sound could be.
I heard something behind me sounding like scissors. Now I knew what Mrs Millett was going to do. ‘POP!’ went the balloon. It sounded like the trigger of a gun. My leg made me jump off my the chair then over my desk. “AAHHH!!!” I yelled in my mind. My heart was pumping faster than getting slower. So that’s how I got the FRIGHT!!!!!!

THE POPPING MOMENT      By Mackenzie W

The moment I sat down and snapped my eyes closed crackling fireworks came into my head. "Wait", I said to myself while my tan face went pale. I noticed what was actually happening. Popping waking noises were happening. My heart shocked like a flashing yellow lazer.
I could hear giggles. "Was it my mind laughing at me?" It wasn’t my mind, it was everyone. Was I the only one terrified? The table was rumbling from everyone laughing. My head popped up. I saw the beautiful sight of light.
We all found out that the mystery sound was the colourful shiny balloon that got popped.
In the end there were all kinds of colourful bits of balloon lying on the floor. I was anxious and relieved at the same time. What a scary and fun time.

Practising our spelling words

Each week in Room 20 we practise our spelling words in a range of fun ways. We can write our words on the windows with liquid chalk, or on the concrete with sidewalk chalk. We can make word-finds, memory games or play hangman with our words. We can also use magnetic letters to trace around our words and even spell them using sign language!

Here are some of us practising our spelling words.
On the concrete outside our room
On the awhina space windows!
Spelling City is a fun website too.

Swimming Sports- our experiences.

In Week 4 we all headed off to Coatesville to compete in our swimming sports. Here are 3 recounts about the event.

Swimming Sports: By Harrison

"Crash!" The mind controlling clapper snapped. Then I saw a school of darting swimmers eager to get to the other side of the pool of torture. The water was icy cold. The first person finished. The timekeepers watched them with there evil eyes as if we were the prey.
Finally it was my race. I ripped off my clothes. I lined up and dipped my feet into the icy cold pool. Then I turned into a popsicle.
The clapper crashed and I was off with a zoom. The water exploded like a erupting volcano. I had a weird colourful hat on my head. My arms were windmills. We were coming second when I was finished.
I ran out of the pool desperately needing my warm towel. Ahh! That feels better.

The water sports:By Sam

"We're here"said Mrs Millett. The six classes charged into the concrete square with crystal clear water.
When everyone got through the gate we layed our towels on the grassy bank then ate our morning tea. When I layed down I was next to Daniel and Liam.
At the time the races started, I scattered to the starting line when my name was called out. At the first race (freestyle) I launched myself off the hard brick wall and swam as fast as a torpedo forming.

In the end I cane 2nd. It was awesome!

The Big Day: By Matthew

I was waiting anxiously in the pool for a clap. I thought it would never go off. "Smack!" a deafening sound hot my ears. My body uncontrollably leaped into action doing an adrenaline forced push off the wall. There was a frothing wake behind me as I sped along through the water.
All I could hear was water rippling and churning. I kicked my arms into full stroke. The water was as blue as sapphires and athletes blood.
Nearly there... Six more arm strokes, five, four... two...touch down!
I got out of the pool, grabbed my towel and left felling puffed out!

Ocean research projects

As part of our shared reading activities around our shared book, "Someday Angeline", we have all completed a mini research project on a sea creature of our choice. This week we all shared our findings and our presentations with each other. Here are some photos of our great mini projects. Come and see all of our great ocean research projects in our classroom!!

Our Trailblazer logo becomes a banner!

In Room 20 we have been creating logos and slogans to represent our trailblazer community. We had a competition to create these and after voting decided that Tamzin's logo with a big letter T trail and blazing base fitted the concept perfectly. We still needed a slogan and chose Nicole's "Blazing the trail of learning together". Next, Tamzin and Nicole drafted their design on a huge banner. All that was left to do was to paint it. Which a group of girls did.

Here are photos of our banner and those that helped create it.

Waiake beach personal experience writing

The day is here!     By Gauri Raj.

'Splish, splash, crash,'  Trembled the shivering waves. The boiling sun was finally melting against the shivering waves. The Trail Blazers were forced to spend a day on the beach that was on fire!
The salty sea salt was making me unconscious. 'Crash, splish, splash!' A huge wave was piling upon us. 'Splish, splodge, splish' The trembling waves faltered. I could hear laughing kids and teachers shouting.
Suddenly I groaned, our time was up, we had to get out of the lovely shivering water. Like a sloth I slipped and slid out of the water. 'Shhhhhhhhhhh' I shivered. The air was cold and damp against my skin.
After changing into my lovely warm uniform, I was at the playground.
'Whow!' I shouted as I gripped the rope with both hands. We were allowed to play on the playground for 15 minutes. I was on the huge jungle gym.

It was the best school trip ever!!!!!!

The beach Trip.    By Kieran Elcombe

"Aur" went the seagulls, as they flew above my head. "OK parents," can you all form a u in the water so the children are safely contained commanded Mrs Millett. When the parents walked over you could fell an electrical force of laziness pound into my body.

"As they dragged their soulless bodies across the beach'" and into the cold refreshing water. Then the shivering adult's formed a unruly u in the sea.

"OK everyone lets go!" I screamed with enthusiasm. Everyone charged like a herd of buffaloes into the water. The water was sandy and you could not see through an all but I had a great time.
