Camp memories

We had a blast at Camp. Here are some of our memories.

Kayaking. By Jack Cook

"Everyone put a lifejacket on and make sure it fits," said the instructor Joel. We all put a life jacket on and grabbed a paddle. We all hopped into a kayak and when Joel pushed us off the platform into the river it felt like a roller coaster.

If you hit the river bank, you robbed the bank. When you looked at the big rocks they looked like crocodiles. When you paddled fast the crisp air flowed into your mouth.

The rough kayak felt like crocodile skin. On the side of the river you could smell the fresh plants. The river looked like a mini nature trail, but instead of rocks there was water.

I capsized 3 times. The water was a freezing refreshing bath. After kayaking, Joel said to stand up in our kayaks. When I stood up, the boat rocked and I fell in.

After, me and Brandon had to drag the kayaks up onto the platform.

The Scream Machine.  By Joseph S

One more pseron left...come on! I was sick of people screaming and saying, "It's weird!" I wanted a turn.

Finally, Yay, it's my turn. After I got harnessed on the parents clipped a rope to the harness.

I swung and swung, up and down. I heard the wind whistling in my ears and people were urging me to scream.

Getting dizzy after a minute, I felt the harness and rope rubbing against me. The helmet was bouncing on my head like a spring. I had no feeling in my feet at all! Suddenly I felt a bump. He had let go of the rope!

I hardly saw anything because I was spinning so fast. I saw blurred images of people looking, people climbing and getting suited up. I saw the rope flying behind me like it had a mind of its own, flying and twisting like a snake in the air.

But what I saw then was the people laughing afterwards.

Athletics adventures

At UHPS we enjoy Athletics sports. This year was no exception. Here are some people's experiences from the UHPS Athletics sports day.

Long Jump. By Natasha A

One more person until my turn. I was at Athletics day. I was doing long jump. After what felt like a million hours it was finally my turn.

"Ready...Go!" said Miss Byers.

I ran as fast as I could. I saw the mat and jumped. But I accidentally stepped over the mat. So my jump was considered a no jump. Luckily we got two turns each. I went to go line up again for my second turn. I was so nervous I couldn't stand still. Finally it was my turn again. This was my last chance.

"Ready...Go!" said Miss Byers to me for the last time.

I sprinted as fast as my legs could go. I could feel the wind rushing in my face. I jumped as high and far as I could. I was so happy with myself when I found out that I came second place! This was definitely the best athletics day ever!

High Jump. By James E

When I was running around in a horse shoe shape, I thought, "How am I going to jump that high bar?" I tried to concentrate on my jump and planted my foot and jumped... and made it!

"Phew!" I'm glad I made 1 metre 5. Now it's time for 1 metre 10. There's no way that I'm going to make it.

I run up and jump... and hit the bar off and I said, "No!" The feeling of disappointment flooded through my brain.
"Never mind," I said to myself, "You tried your best."

Lunch With Granny narrative writing

Earlier in the term we were lucky to have Mr. Peter Millett do a writing workshop with us. He talked to us about making our stories more exciting. We brainstormed lots of ideas for exciting stories and eventually agreed that we needed to have an interesting human main character. After more brainstorming we decided (with a bit of persuading from Mr Millett), that a story about having lunch with Granny would be a good context. We all had fun writing our stories.  Here are some of them.

LUNCH WITH MILLIONAIRE GRANNY
By Daniel W
Sam and granny were going to granny’s new house to have lunch together. They went there in the mini cooper that granny always drove her self . “Are we there yet, are we there yet?” whined Sam.
Finally they arrived at the mansion. Sam was surprised when he drove down the long neatly trimmed, gold plated driveway. When Sam finally saw grannies new house he ran inside .“WOW!” Sam howled. “How did you afford this granny?” asked Sam.
“ Well when your grandad died he appeared to have some kind of jewel that is extremely rare,” she said.
Sam took a tour of the huge mansion. It had 47 bed rooms with a 24 inch tvs in each and a bathroom each. There was a pool and snooker room and a really big pool. In the garage there was 23 cars all red because red is known as fast.
Then Sam got to the lunch table “WOW this is giant table” Sam screamed.
“ Come my young one it is lunchtime” warbled granny.
In the middle of lunch there was a loud BANG!
“Get down!” granny yelled. It was a masked robber so they didn’t know who it was.“They probably want the jewel” shouted granny.
But then granny pushed a button on her walking stick and electronically controlled cage dropped on top the masked robber.
Sam was very impressed and hoped he could see granny every Sunday.

Lunch with Spy granny   By Selene W
It was another rainy day with all the lightning and thunder storm. Me and granny were having tea in the living room.

Suddenly I heard a rattling sound, a creepy one.

“Uh!” I sighed and walked into the kitchen where I saw a key and it was a weird one, It had a smiley face on shaped like a monkey.

“Granny?” I asked, “are these your keys?”

“Um.......um..., No actually,” she murmured, as if she was thinking of something else.

“TELL ME!” I screamed in a funny way.

“Fine,” she whispered. “Follow me with your lightest steps”.
She looked around and began to walk.  I followed her. . . .Crackle Crackle.
“Now don’t tell anyone cause this is my deepest secret.”
Behind the curtain of a long door granny took the key and then she smacked the key in the door hole. A tingle of scarness came down my spine and neck .

The door screeched it sounded like a cat getting angrier and angrier. “Come on honey,” she called in a loud whisper. I went in. It was brighter than I thought and we had to wear special glasses.
“Have you ever thought of being a spy?”  Granny asked me suddenly.
“Seriously! I would love to!” I thought. “but. . . I can’t...”  I said. “Why do we have to wear these glasses? I added. “Because darling,” granny thought.... I love them!”

She slowly opened the door and in front of me was my very own spy gadget set.
“THANK YOU so much gran, You’re the best!”

Lunch With Shark fishing Gran By Mitchell White

“Hey Gran I say should we head in now its getting quite rough and dark out here plus there’s no more food left ’’
“Of course theres no food left,” granny replied, “I only packed two sandwiches and a couple of drinks’’ in a mean hearted voice.
I turned away to stare at the big blue ocean but unfortunately I was staring at it grimmly. The waves came up against each other and then went back down. Abruptly, I hear my gran mutter to herself excitedly then I hear a bang up against the side of the boat.

Suddenly, I saw 2 dozen dorsal fins come up to the boat and go round to my grans side. I crept up to the side of the boat to where my gran was and then that’s when I didn’t believe my eyes. I saw a shark latching onto my Grans hand.
I gave out a shriek. My gran turned round to see me screaming like a girl. Instantly she smacked the shark in the head, and put herself in a position where she tried to look like nothing had happened.
I opened my mouth and I screamed to my gran, “GRAN YOU HUNT SHARKS!!"

“NO I DON’T , look at me I’m just chilling!“
“Yeah sure, I so believe you!“ I replied in a sarcastic voice.
“ I’M BEING HONEST I SWEAR“ Gran replied desperately in a cause to defend herself.
“Well I’ll give you some evidence,” I said to her, “You’re talking sarcastically and you’re acting weirdly, so yeah I think you are a shark hunter!“ I ended with a sly grin.

Then granny she told me the whole story about how she had lost her hand, and why she’s got tattoos and spiky hair. Just then we got a phone call.
“You should answer it,” Gran said, “its probably your mum seeing where you are.“
“Okay“, I replied casually. I meandered over to my grans mobile phone I answered it.
“YELLOW!“
“What the... shark catcher gran is that you “
“No, its not shark catcher granny but um... GGGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN come here theres someone on the phone for you,” I called.
Gran rushed over like a cheetah, “Hello, hello“ she cackled excitedly.
“Shark catcher gran there’s the biggest great white shark man had ever seen. Get here quick!"
With that we were off. As we headed off, I said to gran “I think I’ll come for lunch with you again gran!"

Persuasive writing

In Room 20 we have been learning about how to persuade others by writing arguments. For our first argument we read, "The true story of the 3 little pigs", by Alexander T Wolf. Then we wrote an argument to persuade you, our audience that the Big, bad wolf was not guilty of killing the little pigs. Here are some of our arguments.

Alexander  T Wolf Is Not Guilty. By Sherise N

Alexander T Wolf is not guilty because you haven’t even heard his side. How could you believe or have heard the pigs story if they're dead and Alexander didn’t kill them thats all wrong- HE WAS FRAMED!!! He sneezed, their houses fell down and they died. So he ate them. My point is the wolf didn’t want to waste a good dinner. Also, it's not his fault that he eats meat, he’s a carnivore  and if you eat ham shouldn’t you be considered bid and bad too. Another point is that the police were pigs and so of course they’d favour the pigs side.

My first reason why Alexander shouldn’t go to jail is that we all know what kind of diet wolves have. It’s not their fault that they eat cute little things like bunnies, pigs, puppies, kittens. I mean if cheeseburgers were alive and cute you would be big and bad. If you think of it that way it makes you feel bad (Just like Alexander here). Also if everyone started saying look it’s the big bad human you would feel bad right? Thats one reason why Alexander should not be put in jail.

Some believe that Alexander here is a big bad wolf but the story I’m about to tell you proves them wrong. Now, Firstly the whole thing was about a cup of sugar and Alexander' s granny. You see Alexander was making a birthday cake for his granny when he ran out of sugar,(and had a really bad cold) so he went to the first pigs house and knocked on the door, (and yes he didn’t want to be rude so he knocked) and well the whole door fell right in. It wasn’t Alexanders fault the door feel in, the house was made of straw. So Alexander was about to leave but he felt a sneeze coming on and sneezed a big sneeze and you know what the whole straw house fell in and guess what right in the middle was the first pig HE WAS HOME THE WHOLE TIME!!! so Alexander couldn’t waste a good dinner (and he was dead as a door knob) so he ate the little porker, the same thing happened at the second pigs house. Those pigs are real porkers!!!!! Now they should be the ones in jail!!!!

Now in my opinion you shouldn’t put Alexander in jail because now as you can see Alexander is a very kind, polite, peaceful and someone who really really really loves his granny. Therefore Alexander would do anything to help his granny or in this case do anything (kill) to someone who insults his dear old (very old) granny. So now Alexander still needed a cup of sugar so of course Alexander went to the third pigs house. Now, it took Alexander a long time to get to the third pigs house because he had two helpings of raw pork so Alexander eventually got there puffed and out of breath. He knocked on the door and tried to say loudly (but failed miserably) little pig (taking a big breath) are you in, well the violent little guy say BUZZ OFF and well that pig had no manners whatsoever. Next he screamed at the top of his piggy lungs AND YOUR GRANDMA CAN SIT ON A PIN!!!! Now that made Alexander mad, so by the time the police and reporters (which were all pigs) Alexanders was making a big fuss for them to see. So the police (pigs) thought that the cup of sugar story was boring and made up the big bad wolf thing. Thats another reason why Alexander should not go to jail.

Now for these three reasons I have given you, you shouldn’t put Alexander in jail because the whole BIG BAD WOLF stuff is fake. I declare that my client should be free and claimed NOT GUILTY. One more reason why Alexander should not go to jail he Alexander t wolf did not do anything wrong.

Alexander T wolf is innocent! By Vasti V

Alexander T. Wolf is not guilty. I will prove that the wolf is innocent . There is no more time to waste let’s get on to it .

The wolf is not guilty because he didn’t have a motive to eat those pigs. You can’t blame him just because he is a carnivore, look at these humans they  eat animals. Why don’t you put them in jail?

Secondly,  all the wolf wanted was a cup of sugar so he could make a cake for his grandma. He went for a walk  and saw some houses and remember he only wanted a cup of sugar. He walked up to the first house. Also he had a cold. The first house was made out of straw. The minute he knocked on the door it fell in -he asked is anybody home?. And he felt a sneeze come on. The sneeze came closer and closer and that sneeze came flying out of the nose. The house fell in just as the door did. He saw a perfect little pig  just lying there. He did not waste the perfect ham dinner, no he ate it. Is that so bad?

The wolf is not guilty because that’s what he did with all the the other pigs too. He did not have a plan behind it so he should not go to jail.

In conclusion, here are the facts:
  1. The wolf only wanted a cup of sugar.
  2. He is a carnivore and you can’t expect him to eat plants.
3. The house where poorly built and the pigs were already dead when he ate them.
The Big bad wolf is not guilty and he should not go to jail.

Who is who? (Book Week-book parade)

Last Friday during BookWeek, we had a book parade. Every one came to school dressed up as a character from a book.

There were lots of excellent costumes. Lots of children (and teachers) dressed up as very creative characters!
The teachers also dressed up as a book character like everyone else.

Three people from each block came first, second or third place.
One by one each block walked around to music while showing their costumes. Here are some spectacular photos. We hope you had a wonderful time.

Marshmallow measurement

On the first day of Term 3 we had a fun volume challenge to solve. Mrs Millett explained that she intended to buy lots of marshmallows for a party. The supermarket had a sale on marshmallows: 1000 for $10.00. Mrs Millett didn't know how many 2 litre ice cream containers she would need to store this many marshmallows.

First we worked out how many marshmallows would fit in a variety of different sized containers. This helped us to calculate the average volume of one marshmallow.

Then we had to work out the volume of 1000 marshmallows, and finally figure out how many 2 litre ice cream containers would be need to hold this amount.

It was heaps of fun and quite tricky too, but at least we got to eat some marshmallows at the end!!!

Johnny Danger book review

Johnny Danger

Room 20 has been reading "Johnny Danger" by Peter Millett in class and it is brilliant  ACTION packed book. It has inspired us to be secret agents,  it is a mind blowing book with lots of twists and turns.

Peter has made up lots of funny and creative characters like Doctor
Disastrous and his funny number 2s (they are his henchmen).

Johnny Danger is a top awesome agent with his bogey bombs  chewable parachute and his mega methane pills.

Johnny Danger and his sidekick Penelope go to Ikki Ikki Bunga island to stop the terrible Dr Disastrous and the R.U.D.E.E virus.
(Random Unexpected Digital Effect Embarrasser)

Room 20 thought that Johnny Danger is a very interesting book because its so much like James Bond with all his top secret gadgets
like the spy car, viper and his super umbrella.

We think the book would appeal to any boy or girl from ages 7-13.
READ IT!

Northern Bays Cluster Festival

On Wednesday the 26th of June a group of fantastic dancers took part in the Northern Bays Cluster event at the Bruce Mason Center. These dancers performed in front of more than two thousand people and danced as the country Korea. They performed hip hop and korean fan dancing. The dancers from Room 20 were Jade, Cassady, Mackenzie, Tyler, Lauren, Eunchae and Kamil. With them were more than 10 schools who got together and performed two songs together at the end World in Union and Aotearoa. They did a great job. Here is a video of Upper Harbour's performance.

Measuring madness

In Room 20 we have been learning to measure length using standard measurements, (mm, cm, and m).

On Tuesday,

Wednesday
and Thursday we used trundle wheels, metre rulers, tape measures and school rulers to measure objects around the school.

Here are some amusing photos from our measuring experiences.

The Cup Song

Some of the girls in Room 20 have become "Cups" experts. "Cups" also known as "Cups (Pitch Perfect's When I'm Gone)" is a song by American actress Anna Kendrick from the film Pitch Perfect. It is a cover of "Lulu and the lampshades" song "Cups (You're Gonna Miss Me)", a rendition of a 1937 old-time folk song "Miss Me When I'm Gone" by J. E. Mainer's Mountaineers. Here they are performing "Cups".

Fantastic Flight reports

In Room 20 we have been learning about how an aircraft can achieve flight. We have also been learning how to write a report with an introduction, paragraphs and a conclusion. We have all written reports about the main principles of powered flight. Check out these informative reports.

Flight    By Jade D

Powered flight is the ability for a plane or a helicopter to fly through the sky. The power comes from an engine. This report will cover the 4 forces of flight, rotary aircraft, and jet and propeller planes.

4 Principles of Flight
There are 4 forces that control flight, they are thrust, lift, drag, and weight. Thrust is produced by the engine, and it keeps the plane going forward. Drag is a pull force created by the air, and it keeps the plane balanced. Lift keeps the airplane in the air, and lift is made by the wings. Weight is a pull force, and it carry’s the plane to the ground.

Rotary Wing Aircraft
Helicopters don’t need to move forward in order to fly because they are able to generate lift. The rotor is turned around rapidly by the engine. Tilting the rotor makes the helicopter go forward, backwards, and side to side. The rotor wings produce enough lift to overcome the weight.

How is Thrust Created?
There are two types of airplanes: propeller driven planes, and jet planes. Propeller driven airplanes are driven by a propeller that is turned by the engine. Propellers are shaped like wings. Propellers generate lift to keep the plane in the air. Originally propellers were made out of wood but now they are made out of metal. A jet plane has no propeller but has an engine instead. A jet plane’s tank is a tube with liquid fuel.

Powered flight has been an amazing discovery, it has kept planes in the air. This report has covered, the 4 amazing principles of flight, rotary aircraft, and fixed wings. We can now fly like the birds because of the people that created flight.

Powered Flight     By Nadia L

Powered Flight is the ability planes use to take-off into the air. Powered Flight uses an engine or motor to create lift. Airplanes, helicopters and other man-made flying vehicles use powered flight. The four principles of flight, winged aircrafts and the two basic types of planes will be included in this report.

The Four Principles of Flight
There are four principles of flight - Lift, Drag, Thrust and Weight. Each of these forces are used by aircraft that take flight. Lift is used to take-off into the sky, it is a push force which is made by the forward motion of the aircraft. Drag is a pull force produced from air resistant. Thrust is a push force powered by the engine. Weight is the pull of gravity towards the centre of the earth.

Winged Aircraft
There are two different winged aircraft. Rotary winged aircraft such as helicopters, have narrow wings called rotors provide lift to take-off. Tilting the rotor allows the aircraft to move forward forward, backward and side-to-side. Fixed winged aircraft have thick, wide wings which are attached to the fuselage, the aircraft needs to move forward to generate enough lift under the wings to lift up into the sky.

Two Basic Planes
There are two basic plane types. Propeller driven planes have propellers with two or more blades which are powered by an engine. Jet planes has jet engines. Jet engines uses liquid fuel which is burnt by an air compressor, the heat is then released at high speed out the back of the plane.

Powered Flight has been an amazing discovery for all mankind. This report should inform you of the basics of flight: The four principles, the difference between rotary and fixed winged aircraft and also the two basic plane types. Powered flight has helped the human race to conquer the dream to fly.

Flight   By Jack Cr

Powered flight is the ability for an airplane or a helicopter to maintain flight in the air by using an engine. This report will cover the four forces of flight, rotary wing aircraft and propeller driven and jet planes.

The four principles of flight
There are four forces that control flight, they are lift, thrust, drag and weight. Lift makes the plane go up and is created by the wings. Thrust pushes the plane forward by the engine. Drag and weight are pull forces created by air and gravity. To fly, a plane needs greater push forces than pull forces.

Rotary Wing Aircraft
Helicopters are rotary wing aircraft and the rotor is shaped like a narrow wing, to create more lift than weight. The rotor is turned rapidly by the engine and is tilted, so the helicopter can move forward, backward or side to side.

Propeller and Jet planes
There are two basic types of planes, they are propeller driven and jet planes. The propeller is turned by the engine. The propeller is shaped like a wing and has two or more blades which used to be made of wood but are now made of metal. Jet planes do not have a propeller, but a jet engine instead. Sir Isaac Newton once said “for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction”. If you think of a jet engine as a tube where liquid fuel is turned at high pressure using air from a compressor. The heat forces the gases out the back, which moves the plane forward.

Powered flight is the capacity for an airplane or helicopter staying in the air for a long time using an engine. This report has informed you about the four forces of flight, rotary wing aircraft, and propeller driven and jet planes. The discovery of flight has been an amazing breakthrough for humankind.

Powered flight
By Antonia L

Powered flight is the ability for a plane to lift up in the sky for a long time relying on an engine. This report will inform you about the 4 forces of flight, rotary winged aircraft and how thrust is created.

The 4 principles of flight
There are 4 forces that control flight. They are weight, drag, thrust and lift. Lift makes the plane go up and is created by wings. Thrust pushes the plane forward by the engine. Drag and weight are pull forces created by air and gravity. To fly,a plane needs greater push forces than pull forces.

Rotary winged aircraft
Helicopters are ‘rotary wing aircraft.’ They don’t need to go forward to fly. Their rotors are shaped like aerofoils and provide lift. Helicopters move side to side and forward and backwards by tilting the rotor.

How thrust is created
Propeller driven airplanes have a propeller that turns by some type of engine. Propellers are shaped just like the the wings and generate lift. The first propellers were made of  wood but now most are made of  metal. Jet planes have no propellor and the engine moves the Jet forward instead of propellers. Think of a Jet engine as a tube which liquid fuel is burned at high pressure.

Powered flight has allowed helicopters and planes to fly up into the sky. This report has covered the fantastic 4 forces of flight, rotary wing aircraft and how thrust was created. Now we can fly anywhere thanks to powered flight!
