Cross Country at UHPS!

Yes it's that time again. On Wednesday we headed off across the boggy field after lunch for our annual Cross country event. Spirits were high, and we were keen to show everyone how much stamina we had developed over the last few weeks of training.
It was a challenging run, and Room 20 students were impressive both in their attitude and in their placings too.
Well done Liam for coming 1st in the 9 year old boys, Nicole and Tyler for coming 2nd in the 9 year old girls and 10/11 year old girls respectively.
Also, congratulations to Harrison and Kieran for your 3rd and 4th placings in the 10/11 year old boys!! Great running and fitness training everyone.
Thanks to Vasti, Lauren, Liam and Kieran for leading the 5 and 6 year old children around their tracks. You were awesome leaders!!!

Discovering Flight Immersion

Fantastic balloon jets!
Great action!
On Wednesday we had a really fun day. In the middle and last blocks we got together with our Trailblazer buddies and discovered lots of things about flight by doing a range of science experiments and flight related activities.

Over the course of the 2 hour immersion we made and tested helicopters,  parachutes, soaring cylinders, balloon jets, aerofoils, paper planes and flew some cool flying machines, not to mention read some fascinating flight books too! Here are some photos showing some of our experiences.

Holiday Recounts

It's great to back in Room 20. In week 1 we all wrote about a holiday experience and published these as Wordles. Here are some of our experiences and photos of some of our Wordles too. Come and see all of them in the classroom.

THE BEACH
By Joseph S

‘’Not again’’ I moaned as dad packed us in the van to go to the blustery beach  for the second time in a row. Brum, brum, the van went as we trundled up the road to omaha beach.
Finally after 45 minutes in the van we reached our destination. WASP ALERT, WASP ALERT there were loads of wasps on the path, rephrase, there were millions of wasps on the wood leading towards the beach. Done the drive, got past the wasps, now what else oh yeah, the beach.
When dad went for a run, I dug a huge hole under the towel, so when he sat down he fell right in the hole!  “Is it time to go in the sea yet, “dad” I questioned dad, “yeah’’ squeaked my little sister Thea, ‘’Ok then’’ answered dad.
So here we are in the crisp cold sea , trying to get warm after about 10 minutes, I asked ‘’c-a-n-we-g-o -i-n-now’’ while my teeth vibrated. like i said COLD! Get warm, Get changed that's what I was only thinking at that time.
In the car I had a my Canterburys and a jumper on. when i got back in the house I got myself a milo and retreated to the couch and read a book. AH!

The unexpected
By James E
It was the end of a delicious picnic feast at Red beach. Nana had just walked to the car to read her book. Lucy and I were playing in the soft wet cold sand. I decided to walk back to the car when... I fell into a deep hole and slid down deeper.
Then I felt a tremendous terrifying pain like hail was falling on me. Lucy heard me scream, “Help!” She ran up and asked,“What are you doing in a hole?". Then she yelled out to nana "Nana, nana, James fell down a deep hole."
Nana was about to say get out of the hole, but Lucy replied that I was stuck and was crying. Nana walked over to the hole.  I managed to get a leg out carefully.
Nana and Lucy pulled and I pushed. I came out eventually. I was relieved that I was out. I was glad that nana did not call the Fire Brigade or fall in on top of me.

The Big Crunch!

On Friday we had an exciting and juicy time at UHPS. On 10 May 2013, at precisely 2.13pm we joined 18,000 primary school pupils as we bit into Jazz apples and secured a place in history, as world record holders!

The Jazz Apple Big Crunch was organised as a fun way to remind children and their parents that an apple a day really can help keep the doctor away.
But there was a serious side to the apple crunching. All the money that was raised as part of the record attempt was donated to children’s charity, Kidscan.
With the support of businesses and the community, Kidscan deliver more than 22,000 lunches to more than 270 schools around New Zealand.

We were proud to do our bit to support the Jazz Apple Big Crunch and Kidscan!
