On the first day of Term 3 we had a fun volume challenge to solve. Mrs Millett explained that she intended to buy lots of marshmallows for a party. The supermarket had a sale on marshmallows: 1000 for $10.00. Mrs Millett didn't know how many 2 litre ice cream containers she would need to store this many marshmallows.
First we worked out how many marshmallows would fit in a variety of different sized containers. This helped us to calculate the average volume of one marshmallow.
Then we had to work out the volume of 1000 marshmallows, and finally figure out how many 2 litre ice cream containers would be need to hold this amount.
It was heaps of fun and quite tricky too, but at least we got to eat some marshmallows at the end!!!
